Residents of The Osborn retirement community honored the long history of the organization during Founders’ Week in late April. The commemorative activities kicked off on Friday, April 15, the birthday of founder, Miriam Osborn, and culminated on April 21, the anniversary of the opening of the main building in 1908.
Highlights included a talk on The Osborn’s history by long-time Rye resident, Paul Hicks. Mr. Hicks spoke about how Mrs. Osborn envisioned a “home for aged gentlewomen” in the 1890s and how her lawyer and executer, John Sterling brought her vision to life at the turn of the 20th century. The Osborn is now home to 435 residents across its 56-acre campus.
Residents celebrated Founders Week with the spring kick off of the campus walking group and a “Flower Walk” led by Taro Ietaka from The Rye Nature Center. A reception for Osborn artists hosted by The Rye Free Reading Room gave the wider community a chance to appreciate the talent of the artists, and a demonstration on campus by The Osborn’s own CIA-trained Chef, Richard Lipari, provided a culminating celebration of fine cuisine.
