So, it is finally here!! Sunshine and warm temperatures! You know what that means - more glorious time outdoors! That means fun in the sun, right? Wrong. With that comes all of those critters you are not so happy about. Ticks. Mosquitoes. Even fleas.
Health officials are warning that infections from ticks, mosquitos and fleas have more than tripled in recent years. Worse, tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme and Rocky Mountain spotted fever have also increased in the Northwest, Upper Midwest and California. Mosquitoes have been busy as well carrying West Nile virus along with Zika to certain parts of the country.
Unfortunately, there is nothing medically you can do to prevent these diseases. However, you do have power in protection! You can protect yourself and your family from bites from these disease harboring critters. "Recognize that this is a problem that's worthy of your time and attention," said Dorothy Leland, director of communications for LymeDisease.org, a patient advocacy organization.
There is not much we can control, this happens to be one of those things we can certainly try to prevent. In NYT, Roni Caryn Rabin dispatches valuable information in "How to Protect Yourself From Mosquitoes and Ticks" which will keep you safe all summer.
